Abstract: Structural steels are the most used in civil construction due to toughness, microstructural homogeneity, good weldability and ductility, in addition to the relatively low cost. Steels such as ASTM A36 are used in buildings, bridges, machinery, ships and different components. In these steels the chemical composition is restricted to carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus. In the case of sheet metal manufacturing, the conventional process is controlled rolling. This process can generate anisotropy in the mechanical properties caused by the mechanical loads in the forming of the sheets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties in the longitudinal and transverse directions of a sheet selected from a coil of ASTM A36 steel, with known chemical composition. Samples were taken from the coil for hardness measurements and specimens were used to carry out tensile tests in the longitudinal and transverse rolling directions. The microstructure of the steel was observed using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the values of yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, hardness and energy in the Charpy impact test in the transverse and longitudinal directions are similar.
