The use of cosmetic products has shown continuous growth, driven by increasing concern with aesthetics and personal well-being. During product development, safety and efficacy testing is essential. Traditionally, these tests were performed on animal models due to their physiological similarity to humans, which sparked intense ethical and scientific debates. Currently, in several countries, including Brazil, animal testing for cosmetics is prohibited, highlighting the need for alternative methods. In this context, cell culture emerges as a promising approach for the toxicological and functional evaluation of cosmetic products. This study aimed to characterize different cell culture-based assays used as alternatives to traditional methods, focusing on safety assessment. For this purpose, review articles and eight studies published in the last 20 years addressing in vitro methods applied to cosmetic testing were selected. The results indicate that cell culture-based methodologies provide reliable data, reinforcing their feasibility as a substitute for animal testing.
