This work seeks to reflect the practices and challenges in literacy in times of pandemic for public school teachers in the initial grades of 3 municipalities in the southern region of the state of Espírito Santo. We understand that the literacy process requires a lot of efforts on the part of the teacher, as stated by the authors: CASTANHEIRA, MACIEL and MARTINS, in addition to the student's family support. As a result of covid-19, social distancing made this process more difficult. In order to collect experiences, positive and negative practices in the period when the pandemic began and reached students in the literacy phase, a qualitative case study was carried out. The outbursts of several teachers were evident and we can also see that the teacher is a master in the art of reinventing himself, and deserves much more value. That even with all the technology in the world it is indispensable and irreplaceable.
