PRÁTICAS EM GEOCIÊNCIAS: CARACTERIZAÇÃO MORFOLÓGICA E GEOTÉCNICA IN SITU DE PERFIS DE INTEMPERISMO DE ARENITOS DA BACIA DO PARANÁ NO TRIÂNGULO MINEIRO (MG)

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the morphology of sandstone weathering profiles developed under tropical conditions in the region of Uberaba, in the state of Minas Gerais, where it is possible to observe geological characteristics, which contribute to teaching and learning through practical activities. The paper contains data, such as the description of each outcrop, as well as detailed in situ geotechnical characterization and photographic records, which can lead to a more detailed understanding of the contents worked in the classroom, clarifying and giving meaning to learning. The three most representative profiles were selected in order to provide thorough descriptions of physical, mineralogical, geologic, structural and geotechnical parameters, focusing on different classes of weathering, which include both rock matrix and rock mass. The results show a tiny soil layer on top of the sandstones weathering profiles with sharp boundaries between material layers. The weathering is strongly influenced by geological structures such as stress relief joints parallel to the bedding, which plays an important role in both rock layers’ differentiation and weathering classes. Lastly, strength parameters have demonstrated to be useful for distinction among weathered materials, especially when related to rock matrix studies.
